Night Engine. Let’s Dance To Their Mixtape

Let’s rewind to last week. It was David Bowie’s birthday!! And, not only did he spring a sodding song on us, there was news of an album too. And so, twitter was awash with how much we all worship at The Dame’s Ziggy Stardust all in onesie (but maybe less so his wide legged pant suit and kitten heel combo).

There aren’t many bands that can do Bowie, particularly Let’s Dance era Bowie, so it was a rare treat to have Night Engine’s promo find it’s way into our ‘yes’ pile. Their lead track, I’ll Make It Worth Your While is a thing of joy. That huge stomping intro, those Eno-ish zapping synths…oh it could be a Franz Ferdinand, but it’s a bit more ballsy, and  can someone please open the window and let some of it’s goddam funk out? It’s roll your sleeves up and jerk around the sitting room music, beep beep!

We tracked the band – Phil, Dom, Ed and Lee – down and asked them to make us a mixtape of all their favourite pant swinging anthems. Now, let’s dance.

NIGHT ENGINE MIXTAPE by Beatmagazine on Mixcloud

Steely Dan – Showbiz Kids - What a groove, dirty but slick at the same time.

Tom Ze – Pisa Na Fulo - This’ll make you sway and try to sing in Portuguese.

The Tubes – Haloes An underrated band from the 70’s. Great musicians and the rock out at the end is worth the wait.

Anna Calvi – Suzanne and I - Possibly the greatest female voice out there and a great song.

D. A. F. – Liebe Auf Den Ersten Blick - This has one of the best videos I’ve ever seen and a brilliant dance tune.

Todd Rundgren – International Feel - Nearly 40 years old and it still beats virtually everything out there.

Devo – Freedom of Choice - Completely mental pop that always makes me want to dance.

The Walker Brothers – Nite Flights I could listen to this all day, it feels like you’re embarking on a journey when it starts then you’re greeted with the line “there’s no hope”. Pure brilliance.

Gary Numan – Metal - Unmistakable synth sounds and a simple groove that smacks you round the face

Frank Zappa – Peaches En Regalia - There’s no one like Zappa and this is one of his finest moments.
