Boy Azooga Announce Debut Album ‘1 2, Kung Fu!’ and Share New Track ‘Loner Boogie’

Cardiff band Boy Azooga are the brainchild of Davey Newington and they’re as wired as their name suggests. Following 2017’s single ‘Face Behind Her Cigarette’, Newington and co have shared new track ‘Loner Boogie’ and announced the release of their debut album, 1, 2 Kung Fu!

Having played in various Welsh Orchestra’s and Jazz bands as a teenager, as well as playing drums as part of Charlotte Church’s Late Night Pop Dungeon, it was inevitable that Newington would one day start his own group. The result is a kind of rhythm heavy tribute to funk mastermind William Onyeabor, that features Newington’s pals Daf Davies, Dylan Morgan and Sam Barnes.

Their ‘Loner Boogie’ video was directed by Cardiff film-maker Toby Cameron (who also worked on the ‘Face Behind Her Cigarette‘ visual). Here’s what Davey had to say about the vid:

It’s a scary world out there these days, sometimes you don’t want to go outside. Sometimes you get the Loner Boogie. Follow us into the Cardiff Transport Club for some fish-eye Kung Fu and a Guiness with the legendary Kliph Scurlock. Not sure he’s that into it to be honest though.

The track-listing for 1, 2, Kung Fu!, co-produced by the band and Eddie El Shakarchie aka Dr Ed Boogie and recorded in part in Eddie’s front room in Cardiff, goes like this:

1. Breakfast Epiphany
2. Loner Boogie
3. Face Behind Her Cigarette
4. Walking Thompson’s Park
5. Jerry
6. Breakfast Epiphany II
7. Taxi To Your Head
