Listen to the Playlist Dustin from Beach Fossils Made Us

Beach Fossils are back with a brand new record called Somersault. It’s released through Bayonet Records, the newly founded label from Beach Fossils founder Dustin Payseur’s that he co-owns with his wife Katie Garcia (previous albums were released through Captured Tracks).

Somersault is the New York band’s first outing since 2013’s Clash the Truth – this time around they’ve got more complex with their instrumentation but thankfully expanding their sonic palette hasn’t compromised their unadulterated brand of dream pop.

We asked Dustin to put together a playlist for us – you know, to listen to in-between repeat listens of Somersault – here’s his selection!

▶️ Stereo MC’s – ‘Sofisticated’
“Without fail, every time I put this track on I get hyped up. Such a jam.”

▶️ Primal Scream ‘Gentle Tuesday’
“Sonic Flower Groove is easily my favorite Primal Scream record. The 12 string guitar work all over that album rules.”

▶️ Walter Wanderley – ‘It’s Easy To Say Goodbye’
“One of my favorite Brazilian musicians. I first heard this at a friends house, it was snowing outside and we were both very stoned and I told him I wanted to hear something mellow. He dug out this record and put it on, we just kept flipping it over and over on the turntable for the rest of the day.”

▶️ Kevin Ayers – ‘Song For Insane Times’
“We’re living in insane times right now, so this one is a bit self-explanatory. Also the intro is so sick.”

▶️ David Crosby and Graham Nash – ‘Broken Bird’
“Every time Crosby and Nash got together they did something incredible. Two of my favorite songwriters right here. The play between their guitar melodies and vocal harmonies are next level.”

▶️ Bee Gees – ‘New York Mining Disaster 1941’
“Early Bee Gees is so fucking good. So is later Bee Gees. They were just amazing. But this track in particular has always stuck out to me. It also deals with a real event that happened in NY, so it doubles as a history lesson for all you little freaks that got F’s in school like me.”

▶️ Galaxie 500 – ‘Tugboat’
“This song is like a beautiful morning sunrise in song form. I can smell the fresh cut grass when I close my eyes.”

▶️ The Replacements – ‘Tiny Paper Plane (Demo)’
“I’m not a fan of The Replacements, but this demo is so beautiful, I always find myself coming back to it.”

▶️ Mongo Santamaria and His Orchestra – ‘Dimelo’
“I’m Cuban, so you know I had to put some fire in this playlist for you.”

▶️ Michael Franks – ‘The Lady Wants To Know’
“Love the guitar work. Sending you off into the sunset with this breezy little track.”
