Read an Interview with Weird Pop Trio Ménage à Trois

The press release detailing Ménage à Trois’ debut album Australia Part III features the epic opening line describing the band as, “Three angels coming from the sky to spread the word.” The word they’re spreading is a shimmering, laidback and distinctly Manchester message that’s actually beautiful in its sensual sincerity and balearic-tinged sounds. Basically they’re a weird pop boy band.

The trio are a multi-talented bunch, not only pumping out glimmering pop tunes but Craig Langton works at an LGBT Foundation, Jonathan is a photographer and teaches Image Making & Styling and Joseph Manning has fine credentials as an ex Wu Lyf member.

Read a chat with Craig, Jonathan and Joseph and listen to Australia Part III below (be sure to check out ‘Kangaroo’ featuring the brilliant line “Oh how I want you, like a Kangaroo“).

What 3 words best describe the Ménage à Trois sound?

What 3 things would you take to a desert island?
Joseph: Would only really need one thing. Somebody to love. Desert islands in our minds wherever we are.

What are the 3 best songs ever written?
Jonathan : Donny Hathaway’s ‘A Song For You’. I was driving in the middle of the night with my first love, we’d got lost on the road and with each other, it was raining and we weren’t talking. This song came on and was introduced with the story of its recording. Donny Hathaway sang his last song and then shot himself in the head in a car park. It was a powerful moment in time and I can still relate to the feeling I get when I hear his voice. I’d also like to take this opportunity to say that I still love you.
Joseph : George Michael’s ‘A different corner’. Its my favourite because Mrs Jones told me it sounded like menage.
Craig : Enigma ‘Return to innocence’. The most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you can find someone to love the you that you love, well, that’s just fabulous.

What are 3 things your album will do for people if they buy it?
Jonathan: We hope you feel the love but beyond that we didn’t really have an agenda with the album.

What are the last 3 things you ate?

Mango, Sushi, Craig.

3pm or 3am?
Craig: 3am because its 9pm in Mexico and a good time to talk to this sweet man I met 2 weeks ago.

Would you rather eat 3 pigeons or 3 squirrels?
All: No.

What are 3 facts about the making of your debut album Australia Part III?
Joseph: We recorded over 3 sessions in winter, spring and summer. Our producer smoked a lot of hash. We fought about the cover but in the end love is stronger than pride.

Please can the three of you each tell us about a dream you’ve had lately that you remember?
Jonathan: I was attacked by snakes in a bath tub but I looked it up and it means I’m like in the process of healing or something.
Craig: I was laying down in a field getting liposuction.
Joseph: I had a dream this morning but I can’t remember it.

What 3 things do you hope happens to Ménage à Trois in 2017?
Craig: We wanna hang with Mary J Blige. Collab with Daddy Yankee. Make another album.

Ménage à Trois play Snap, Crackle & Pop at London’s Waiting Room on 6th May
