Listen to the Playlist Tender Central Made Us

Communion Single Club harks back to the early days of the label when they’d just started out and it cost much to press and release albums, so they’d release really great 7″ singles and 10″ EPs instead. Communion have since resurrected the idea to release a whole bunch of brilliant songs on limited edition 7″ vinyl that you get sent when you subscribe (more info on how all that works here).

The first CSC release of 2017 is this lovely number from Tender Central:

Tender Central is the nom de plume of Devon born classically trained cellist India Bourne. ‘Lava’ features Matthew And The Atlas’ Matthew Hegarty and was produced by Kideko with some extra help from Jakwob on the project. Since she clearly has great taste, we asked Bourne to put together a playlist for us. Press play on her selections below…

Radiohead – ‘Everything in It’s Right Place’
“This song cruises with such effortless understated dance-like energy, I find it utterly addictive to listen to. It’s like a breath of fresh air.”

Arvo Part – ‘Fratres (for cello and piano)’
“The way this piece unfolds for me, is like watching time itself slow down.”

Jeff Buckley – ‘Grace’
“What a songwriter and what a voice. It soars so effortlessly through the octaves with such colour and ornamentation, I haven’t heard anyone else sing like him. He died so tragically young. I always wondered what he would have become.”

Joni Mitchell – ‘Woodstock’
“The first Joni Mitchell song I ever heard. I remember sitting in the back of a car driving round the south of France as a young teen and from that moment on I was sold.”

Sylvan Esso – ‘Coffee’

“This song instantly makes me think of touring with Ben and the band. This was the song we’d put on to dance round the dressing room to get ready for the show.”

Peter Gabriel – ‘Biko’
“Peter Gabriel is a beast of the songwriting world. I listened to him a lot growing up and I love his instrumentation, his powerful voice and his lyrics. This song is spine tingling, emotional and stops everyone in their tracks.”

Afriquoi, Kudaushe Matimba – ‘Kudaushe’
“Because I cannot not dance to this song. The groove is insane!”

Bjork – ‘Stonemilker’
“The strings in this song take me to such a beautiful and heartbroken place. I am so inspired by her fearless songwriting. ”

John Martyn – ‘Go Down Easy’
“When I told a friend I hadn’t heard any John Martyn before, he sat me down and played me this. I was spellbound for the duration. The interplay between the double bass and guitar under John Martyn’s vocal lines is second to none.”

Elgar – ‘Enigma Variations: Variation IX: Adagio’
“This piece raises a big lump in my throat whenever I listen to it. It’s a very tender, graceful piece that I hold close to my heart.”

Bon Iver – ‘Holocene’
“I listened to this song on repeat when this record came out. It has so many levels. I transcribed it for my ladies choir… what a stunner.”

Paul Simon – ‘Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes’
“Paul Simon’s Graceland is an old favourite of my family. We’d spend hours of car journeys singing through the record. This song was my favourite of the lot.”
