Let’s begin by saying that you’re in for a real treat with this one. Perfume Genius (aka Mike Hadreas) has shared the video for ‘Slip Away’, the first taste of brand new album No Shape and basically Hadreas’ has really outdone himself this time.
The ‘Slip Away’ video is all soft focus and explosive and seems to be exclusively running on some kind of Kate Bush channeling high drama. It’s directed by frequent Björk collaborator Andrew Thomas Huang and tells the story of the intimate relationship between two sisters (one of which is played by Hadreas).
Basically, it’s a triumph of music video making.
The album No Shape is out on 5th May via Matador Records and follows 2014’s Too Bright and it’s anthemic standout track ‘Queen‘. Here are some words right from the mouth of Perfume Genius about the whole thing:
I pay my rent. I’m approaching health. The things that are bothering me personally now are less clear, more confusing. I don’t think I really figured them out with these songs. There’s something freeing about how I don’t have it figured out. Unpacking little morsels, magnifying my discomfort, wading through buried harm, laughing at or digging in to the embarrassing drama of it all. I may never come out the other side but it’s invigorating to try and hopefully, ultimately helpful. I think a lot of them are about trying to be happy in the face of whatever bullshit I created for myself or how horrible everything and everyone is.
