Read an Interview with Garage Rock Disruptor Ron Gallo

Ron Gallo is a human person known for being very tall, being blessed with enviable curls and also his former band Toy Soldiers. He’s now firmly in solo territory with his garage rock wild card album Heavy Meta. Gallo says his world view falls somewhere between “The world is completely fucked” and “The universe is inside you,” so we decided to pick his brain about his new album and stuff.

What will your album do for people if they buy/listen to it?
If they buy it, they will achieve immediate enlightenment. If they stream it free on Spotify, they just get a glimpse and then return back to their personal hell.

What are some things you’ve been questioning lately?
Why did i just buy a $5 coffee that took 15 minutes to make? What kind of pyjamas does Danzig wear? Who am I? Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? What if God was one of us? What if? What if? What if? How did Brit Marling come up with The OA? How did our album end up in a Tower Records in Japan?

Where are we going?
Deeper into human sickness that if we looked at it for what it really is could lead to mass awakening. Or, probably going to a highway rest stop.

What’s the Ron Gallo manifesto?
“The world is completely fucked, but the universe is inside you.” – Ron Gallo official artist bio.

Tell us your best worst joke!
I don’t have any jokes. 🙁 Maybe just look around?

Things you do to please yourself include…
Listen to jazz, wash dishes.

Some good advice…
Question your own mind. Stay off the facebook. Get out of your comfort zone. Laugh.

How’d you feel about everything that’s happening in America right now?
Nothing new. Right now is just one more example of the same human illness/issues that have existed forever. It is about breaking the cycle and going above it, because it may never change. The outside world is continuously reminding us to look within by remaining ugly, yet we keep choosing to seek our fulfilment from it. We need to do the ONLY real work – get our own selves right, transform, live by example, live with compassion for all humans. Take the power back.

NSync or Backstreet Boys?
Backstreet Boys all the way.

What are the ingredients that went into your album ‘Heavy Meta’?
The canned meat of humanity, fuzz pureè, paprika, watermelon smashed by Gallagher.

What’s the last book you read? Give us a review…
I am finishing a book called Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda. People unfamiliar with it or the world it comes from might be conditioned to write it off as ‘some weird new age Indian religious text’, so I will use a reference everyone can digest: George Harrison, solo artist and guitarist of a little local rock group called The Beatles once said of the book, “I keep stacks of Autobiography of Yogi around the house, and I give it out constantly to people. When people need ‘regrooving’, I say read this, because it cuts to the heart of every religion.”
It’s incredible. It shows the potential of human beings, of what life could be – it combines science and spirituality in the form of a truly incredible tale.

What’s for dinner?
Dylan, our drummer, his parents are in town and his mom is making us all eggplant parmigiana tonight.
