Who is Rina Mushonga? Good question. The Dutch-Zimbabwean songstress has a new song ‘AtalantA’ out via [PIAS] recordings and we’re premiering the accompanying vid for the track here.
The track follows Mushonga’s debut album The Wild, The Wilderness and 2016’s Bullet EP and takes inspo from the Greek mythological figure ‘Atalanta’ in Ovid’s Metamorphosis, legendary for her female strength and empowerment. Recorded in Mushonga’s newly adopted home of South London with producer Brett Shaw (Florence & The Machine, Rufus Wainwright, Daughter), the track is a first taste of her forthcoming second album which is sure to be pure fire if ‘AtalantA’ is anything to go by.
Here’s what Mushonga wrote us about the track:
The video was shot over a wintry weekend in Peckham, where I live with my best friend and film maker Gugi van der Velden. It’s a small ode to my new neighbourhood I guess and the people that make it such a vivid and inspiring place to live. We just wanted to capture the emboldening energy of the song and show that ‘AtalantA’ as a symbol of strength and inspiration can also be found in the everyday, in the people and places that surround you.
